COURSE SYNOPSIS

DM116 Introduction to communication

This module aims to provide students with foundational knowledge in the field of communication and media. It provides first year students with a broad introduction to the core concepts, theories, language and analytical frameworks that they will meet in more depth and detail over the course of their studies.

·         Students will develop a broad understanding of the historical development of communication and media.

·         Define, identify, and analyses the essential focus of communication study and theory, including the communication cycle, verbal and nonverbal communication.

DM117 Principles of Digital Journalism

 

This module will help students to understand the way in which digital journalism works. It clarifies how the emergence of technology has shaped the media landscape. The module guide students to benefit from the technological development in order to practice journalism in a better way.  Students will be provided with a deep understanding of the digital journalism landscape as well as the working flow in the digital newsroom structure.

 DM 114 Media ethics

This module will advance the skills and competence of students who will engage in one or all forms of journalistic work at all levels of media and across all platforms. By Discussing the current issues related to journalism profession, students will understand the science of media ethics and its importance.

●    Familiarize students with the prominent technological changes relating to media ethic practice.

●    Provide a suitable environment to practice media ethics in order to exchanged information, beliefs and learn about cultural varieties.

DM119 Writing for the Media:

 

This module will help students to understand the media genres and help them to improve their writing skills in journalism. They can produce a sophisticated pieces of journalism for different media platforms.

·         Familiarize students with the news sources.

DM128 Media Law

 

This module will help students understand the way media law works. It clarifies how the development of the media has shaped the laws of its practices. The module guides students to make better use of the profession of journalism towards objectivity and professionalism. It will provide students with an understanding of the media law and related topics (journalists’ rights and duties, freedom of expression and journalism, criticism, censorship, and written defamation, etc.).

DM 129 Multimedia Journalism

This module will give students a clear understanding of working across multiple media platforms and guide them to create video, audio, text and pictures to publish in different media platforms such as, print, radio, television outlets and digital platforms. The aim of the module is to introduce you to storytelling and narrative.

●       Know how to look for and gather information, and to present it effectively for a variety of media platforms

●       Writing news reports, features, email bulletins.

●       use online tools to build a website or portal.

●       Shooting, cropping, editing and captioning pictures and videos.

DM 126 Graphic Design

 

The aim of this module is to make students utilize knowledge gained to design and develop media artefacts with a high quality of layout and graphic design features. Conceive, create and deliver a range of layout and graphic design media products to a high standard, demonstrating a capacity for critical evaluation and professional competence. Competently construct and present hard-copy promotional material adaptable to multiple formats as requiring using integrated multimedia skills.

DM 239 Principles of Advertising:

This Advertising Module is designed to provide basic understanding and the ethical and administrative principles of advertising including the most important types of principles that students need to have proper information about. Furthermore, the history and the development stages of advertising until the era of social and digital media is comprehensively discussed. The impact of advertising, its aims, benefits and disadvantages are also explained with examples.

·         Gain knowledge on the impact and role of advertising in different aspects of human life in general.

DM 236 Web Development

This module gives a general introduction to Web Development, including information, Web Design, Editing, Uploading, Web Creating on WIX  and the development of web-based information systems. It provides students with practical knowledge of the Web development process and Design, associated techniques and technologies with a focus on web-based information systems.

DM 237 Media production

 

The primary objective of the media production module is to provide students with both theoretical and the technical training necessary to produce program material for both broadcast and non-broadcast media such as film and advertising industries.

 

Module Learning Outcomes

 

·         Prepare students for rewarding careers in moving image production.

·         Learning multi-camera TV studio production, non-linear editing, production management, screenplay & script writing, video field production

·         The module covers the fundamental techniques and concepts of the preproduction and production processes. 

 

·         Students will explore the aesthetics of bringing video and audio together to create a dynamic presentation for a variety of media communications.

 

·         The course examines scripting, treatments, visual and audio storytelling, storyboarding, editing, sound, media management, narration and industry terminology, and application.

 

 DM 238 social media

This module will give students a clear advice on working across different social media platforms and guide them to use social media as a media tool to promote ideas. Accordingly, students will have ability to use each platform according to market needs. They will also understand advantages and disadvantage of each platform.

 DM 2310 Photography

Photojournalism has influenced everyone’s visual heritage and is a medium practiced by countless people in global.  The module’s mission is to provide students a quality photographic education in technique, creativity and content, and historical and contemporary trends in photography area.

 

1-Produce photo suitable for seeking career opportunities in photography area.

2-At the end of this course students should have acquired the basic skills necessary for the use digital image for journalism aspect or any other medias.

3. Student will Solve creative problems in photography area, including any search of technical, and conceptual knowledge.

4. Understand to Communicate photography concepts to some audiences using proper visual, and written skills.

5. Student should Evaluate photo works, including their own work, using professional terminology.

6. I will Demonstrate the safe use of photography equipment in the studio and on location or any other areas. These include the techniques of camera and it equipment.

7. Students should also be able to articulate ideas about their own work and of others.

 

 

DM 248 Web Application Design

 

Communication design prepares students with valuable skills for today\'s media-rich culture that allows them to succeed in the fields of communication, marketing, business, entertainment and more.

DM 249 Media Management 

The aim of studying this module is to analyze how to manage media organizations and understand the specificities of management and media management. Students will have a clear understanding of different theories of media management. They can Implement specific tools, practices and media management strategies.

On this course students will explore what digital marketing is, why it is crucial and look at some digital marketing strategies including display advertising, pay per click advertising, search engine optimization and email marketing.

DM 2411 Mojo and citizen journalism

 

In this module students will be introduced to the world of mobile journalism. They gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge in the field. After finishing this module students can use make a professional journalism project only by using their smartphones.

DM 1111 Academic Debate

This course is designed to develop students’ skills in academic thinking, communication, argumentation and debate. The topics of this course train students to think critically, to be creative, communicative, and a qualified individual who respect others’ points of view and lead academic arguments as well. The course trains them to apply different sources for academic communication, also to generate knowledge. Moreover, they are prepared to do influent presentations, and to write academic reports related to their study.

 This module will introduce student with current useful computer softwires such as Microsoft Window, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint.
